Thursday 3 December is the UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This occasion promotes the full and equal enjoyment of human rights and participation in society by disabled people. Marking the day the Foreign Secretary David Miliband said:
"Disabled people continue to suffer discrimination around the world. Earlier this year, the UK was proud to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and is encouraging other countries to do the same. We want the international community to unite in protecting and promoting the rights of disabled people.'
We are working on a number of projects to promote the rights of disabled people globally. For example, in India to mainstream disability in the national development agenda; In Jordan to improve capacity to maintain professional standards for disability services; and increasing employment opportunities for disabled youth in Ukraine. We will continue this important work to promote human rights for all people.
